West Ada Superintendent Derek Bub announced Monday that he has received a cancer diagnosis.
Bub said in a statement posted to Facebook that he was diagnosed last week and will begin treatment immediately.
“I feel extremely fortunate that it was caught very early, and I’m expected to make a full recovery,” Bub wrote.

Bub, 49, did not share what type of cancer he has or a treatment timeline. He has led Idaho’s largest school district since 2021.
He plans to continue working through treatment but acknowledged that medical appointments may occasionally affect his availability. Bub expressed confidence in district leaders to make decisions during his absence.
“I want to reassure you that our focus on students will not change,” Bub wrote. “The most important work in West Ada happens in our classrooms, and student success is driven every day by the dedication of our teachers, support staff and school leaders. That work will not miss a beat.”
He thanked the community for its support.
“West Ada may be a large district, but we are also a community,” Bub wrote. “The support, encouragement, and kindness I have already received give me strength as I begin this journey.”
