August is back-to-school month across Idaho – for most students.

Two schools started last week. Friday, Aug. 7 was Day 1 for Sage International students in Boise and Middleton.

Idaho’s two largest districts, Boise and West Ada, return Wednesday, Aug. 12.

To the excitement – or chagrin – of some students, another month remains before the latest first day of school in Idaho: Sept. 9 at the Hollister Charter School.

The first days of school in Idaho’s 198 school districts and charters fall on a 33-day spectrum. Earlier this year, a failed bill in the Statehouse would have consolidated that spectrum into one day: the Tuesday after Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 8 this year. Currently, around 16 districts or charters start on that day.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. John Vander Woude, a Nampa Republican, said the tourist industry “would like to keep their employees through Labor Day.” The House Education Committee killed the bill.
