The search for Boise State University’s next chief academic leader is underway.

“Our next steps are to finalize the search timeline, appoint the committee, and begin recruitment, with the goal of naming a provost by the end of 2026 or early in the Spring 2027 semester,” Boise State leadership said in an email to the campus community Wednesday.

The hire — for the provost and vice president for academic affairs — will provide new president David Hahn with one of his first chances to make an imprint at Boise State. The university put the provost’s search on hold while the State Board of Education completed a 15-month presidential search. Hahn was hired on July 1.

Now, the provost search takes center stage.

“President Hahn has prioritized launching this national search as quickly as possible,” university officials said Wednesday.

The provost’s post is one of several top-level vacancies at Boise State — and one of several key departures since March 2025, when Marlene Tromp left the presidency to take the top job at the University of Vermont.

John Buckwalter left Boise State in July 2025 for a similar post at the University of Central Florida. Since then, Zeynep Hansen has served as interim provost.

The search will be co-chaired by Erik Hadley, an assistant professor of history and past president of the Boise State Faculty Senate.
