Eight months after winning reelection for a second term on the Nampa school board, trustee Brook Taylor resigned last week. 

In a letter to the school board Monday, Taylor wrote that she has less time to devote to the position “as I take on new professional opportunities. I believe this position deserves someone who can give it the time and attention it requires,” she wrote. 

Taylor served as chairwoman of the Nampa school board between 2023 and 2025. She won her first term in 2021 after campaigning against Critical Race Theory and mask mandates amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Taylor’s tenure was marked by a strained district budget, which led to school closures and tense contract negotiations with teachers and service providers. In 2024, Nampa became Idaho’s largest district to adopt a four-day schedule. 

Taylor wrote Monday that it’s been “an honor to see firsthand what happens inside our schools every day.” 

“Watching our administrators, teachers, and staff care for children, meet them where they are, and help them grow has been nothing short of inspiring,” she wrote. “I have watched children learn to speak, move into advanced classes, navigate difficult days, and dream bigger. What I love most about this community is that it truly shows up for its children.”

Taylor handily won reelection in November, defeating challenger Andy Kersten by a 59% to 41% margin. Taylor’s second four-year term on the school board was set to run through 2029.

The school board will appoint someone to serve the remainder of Taylor’s term. Trustees are planning to declare the vacancy and start accepting applications Tuesday, according to an agenda for the special board meeting. The application deadline is scheduled for Sept. 4.

In a statement included in Tuesday’s agenda, the school board thanked Taylor for her “dedicated service” and “willingness to listen, collaborate, and serve the community.”

“Serving on a school board requires countless hours of thoughtful leadership, careful decision-making, and a steadfast commitment to public education,” trustees said in a joint statement. “Throughout her time on the Board, Trustee Taylor generously shared her time, talents, and passion in support of the district’s mission and the success of our students.”
