A memorial service is slated for Sunday for former Idaho educator and one-time state superintendent candidate Terry Gilbert.
Gilbert, 80, died on Aug. 30.
Sunday’s service is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Terraces of Boise, 5301 E. Warm Springs Ave., Boise.
According to an obituary in the Twin Falls Times-News, Gilbert died from vascular dementia, stemming from a January 2023 stroke.
“Dementia compromised his mobility and his cognition, but the way he navigated the last years of his life reflected the qualities that defined the whole of his existence: Terry was strong, brave, tender-hearted, and tenaciously maintained an inner light, wit, humor, and love for others until his final conscious moments.”
An Oregon native, Gilbert attended Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa. He taught in Marsing and Nampa and later served a one-year term as president of the Idaho Education Association, the state’s teachers’ union. In 2022, he was the Democratic Party nominee for superintendent of public instruction.
