Another week. Another spike in new coronavirus cases.
On Friday afternoon, the state Department of Health and Welfare and its seven health districts reported 70,894 confirmed or probable coronavirus cases. Case numbers have increased 11 percent in the past week.
This week’s 6,886 cases — nearly 1,000 cases daily — represent another grim record, marking the fifth successive week of record cases.
And this week’s outbreaks occurred in nearly every corner of the state: 30 of Idaho’s 44 counties reported increases of at least 10 percent.
While case numbers continue their month-long upward spiral, other indicators were mixed. Hospital admissions and ICU admissions increased from last week. While 53 Idahoans have died from COVID-19 in the past week, that number is down from last week’s record death toll.
In other coronavirus headlines from the week:
Testing of teachers ramps up: The state is starting to deploy rapid antigen tests across the state — with an emphasis on testing teachers and school staff. The state hopes to administer more than 500,000 tests in the next few months, but it’s not exactly clear how many teachers have been tested yet.
Boise district downplays risk of spread. “Medical Experts: ‘Boise School District Not Contributing To Community Spread of COVID-19.’” That’s the headline from an announcement the district sent out Thursday — trying to get the word out about a Monday school board meeting with local hospital officials. The announcement raised some eyebrows, and the district issued a clarification later Thursday, acknowledging health officials’ “very real concerns” about coronavirus spread.
