A former administrator has sued the Idaho Falls School District over allegations of discrimination.

Former Skyline High assistant principal Jody Immel claims the district discriminated against her based on her sex, religious beliefs and veteran status, as EastIdahoNews.com first reported Thursday.

Immel, 60, applied for 26 positions in the district, the lawsuit states, yet the jobs were “awarded to younger individuals who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and predominantly male.” Immel said the district passed her over despite her superior qualifications. Immel also worked as an advanced programs coordinator and college and career advisor at Emerson High while employed with the district, court records show. She is not a member of an organized religion.

The district denied Immel’s allegations detailed in a 15-page complaint filed in court, which EdNews reviewed Thursday.

Immel said she was in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years and is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and hearing loss. She has partially disabled veteran status. She said the district did not honor her request for accommodations — another allegation the district denied.

Immel left the district in 2024. The district says she resigned — a claim she denied, saying her departure stemmed from her inability to sign a teacher contract because her teaching certificate lapsed while she was an administrator. The district told Immel it was changing her job classification and reducing her pay amid districtwide cuts in 2024, court records show.

“This is a pretty clear case of a district treating an individual, near retirement age with disabilities, differently than they treated other employees,” Immel’s attorney, Anna Moritz of Seattle-based Cedar Law LLP, told EastIdahoNews.com.

Immel formerly taught in Arizona and began her work as an assistant principal at Idaho Falls in 2013.

A pre-trial meeting is scheduled for June 24.
