Secretary of state: Another candidate?

Sen. Marv Hagedorn, R-Meridian

Add state Sen. Marv Hagedorn, R-Meridian, to the list of possible candidates for secretary of state.

On Friday, shortly after incumbent Ben Ysursa announced he would retire after three terms, Hagedorn took to Facebook to float the possibility.

“Patty and I are considering I run for his seat, I have many friends here and would appreciate and consider your thoughts as well.”

Amidst the robust discussion came more than 80 “likes” from his Facebook friends — including fellow Sens. Steve Bair, R-Blackfoot, and Jim Rice, R-Caldwell, and a “like” from at least one Democrat, Rep. Holli Woodings of Boise.

This is shaping up, potentially, to be a crowded GOP primary. State Rep. Lawerence Denney, R-Midvale, is already in the race. Ada County deputy clerk Phil McGrane and former state Sen. Mitch Toryanski of Boise have been named as possible candidates.

The secretary of state is best known as Idaho’s top elections officer. But the secretary of state also holds one of five spots on the Idaho Land Board, which makes endowment decisions that affect a list of beneficiaries, starting with K-12.
