In her final months in statewide office, Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin is trying to recruit parents to serve on a local textbook review committee.

In a strange Tuesday news release, McGeachin urged West Ada School District parents to apply for spots on a committee that will help choose kindergarten through fifth-grade textbooks.

The textbook committee will hold seven meetings between Oct. 25 and Jan. 10, when it will make recommendations to the school board.

The McGeachin news release doesn’t actually mention McGeachin, who lost to Gov. Brad Little in the May Republican primary and will leave office in early January. It contains contact information for Machele Hamilton, McGeachin’s director of strategy and constituent services. After the primary, McGeachin gave Hamilton a full-time job at a $77,000 salary, nearly a fourfold pay raise.

And it copies — nearly word for word — a West Ada news release from last week. With one error: The McGeachin release says the new textbooks will be adopted in the fall of 2024, while the district says the adoption will take place in 2023.

Greg Wilson — West Ada’s spokesman, and a former aide to Little — said he had no problem with McGeachin’s recruiting effort. “We like maximum participation from West Ada parents for our curricular materials committee and appreciate the lieutenant governor helping us get the word out.”
