Nationwide, 16,000 high school seniors were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists this week — 86 hail from Idaho.
They will each compete to earn one of 6,700 scholarships doled out by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a combined $24 million in aid.
Semifinalists represent about 1% of high school seniors in the U.S. and are selected based on their SAT scores.
The Boise School District boasted 32 semifinalists in its high schools, and West Ada schools put up 12 semifinalists. Around eight came from charter schools.
The number of semifinalists is based on the number of overall graduating seniors in Idaho.
About 95% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship and Merit Scholar title, said a Sept. 9 press release from National Merit.
National Merit will announce finalists between April and July 2027.
