One of Boise State University’s campus thoroughfares appears to have a new name.
The university plans to rename Cesar Chavez Lane to West Friendship Lane and has submitted the proposal to Ada County for approval, according to BoiseDev.com, which first reported Tuesday on the possible name change.
After surveying the campus community, university officials submitted three proposed names to county officials earlier this month.
Friendship Lane — “a write-in suggestion proposed by students, faculty and staff,” Boise State said earlier this month — made the cut through a process of elimination.
Campus Lane was ruled out because it resembled the name of existing Compass Lane. A third candidate, Peregrine Lane, was rejected because the name is in use elsewhere in Boise.
Boise State hasn’t formally announced the new name, BoiseDev reported. EdNews asked the university about the apparent name change but received no confirmation Wednesday morning.
However, according to BoiseDev, the new name is essentially a done deal. The Ada County assessor, county development services, the Ada County Highway District and the city of Boise have already signed off.
Boise State began considering the name change in March, after a New York Times investigation linked Chavez to a pattern of sexual abuse. The university named the campus thoroughfare for the union and civil rights leader in 2006.
