Idaho’s state controller wants to spend the next month shining a light on transparency.

Brandon Woolf Friday announced that he is designating August as Idaho Transparency Month.

In a news release, Woolf described Transparency Month as “a statewide initiative celebrating Idaho’s longstanding commitment to open government while highlighting the tools and resources that empower Idahoans to better understand how their government operates.”

Woolf’s office maintains Transparent Idaho, a website that provides budget data from state and local governments, including public employee salaries.

“At a time when trust in government is under increasing pressure, transparency has never been more important,” Woolf said in a news release. “When government information is easy to find, easy to understand, and available to everyone, citizens are better equipped to participate in their communities and hold government accountable. Transparency isn’t about checking a box. It’s about earning and maintaining the public’s trust.”

Woolf said his office will sponsor stakeholder discussions, share “Did You Know” transparency tips and conduct “man-on-the-street” outreach “to hear directly from Idahoans on their attitudes towards government transparency.”
