Day 57: Another day at the Statehouse

State superintendent Debbie Critchfield spent much of Thursday at the Statehouse.

She headed to the House Education Committee in the morning, to support Rep. Marco Erickson as he presented his bill limiting the use of restraints in school — it was held in committee.

And after a refugee appreciation lunch, and a special meeting of the State Board of Education, she headed to the Senate Education Committee to support her parental rights legislation. It passed unanimously.

Critchfield repeated her goals to the committee: to ensure parents are the “primary stakeholders” in their children’s education, and put them in the driver’s seat. The legislation, she said, codifies things most districts are already doing, but gives parents something to look to if they feel their rights are being violated.

The state superintendent also held a meeting with Dave McGarrah of the Deer Flat Church Thursday, and another meeting with Rep. Wendy Horman and Sen. Dave Lent.

Rounding out a busy day, she’ll speak Thursday evening at the Ada County Central Committee meeting.
