The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Idaho nearly $4.8 million to create a statewide system that will help students document and showcase the skills they develop in school and beyond.

The state will receive the money over the next three years from the federal government’s Career Pathways Exploration Grant Program. The state department will develop the “Idaho Learner Readiness Ecosystem,” a project aimed at helping students connect their learning with their activities in and out of the classroom.

Students will make the connections in an experience portfolio, a document intended to accompany their transcript or résumé.

“Students can document learning from experiences like class projects, athletics, jobs, community service and leadership roles,” according to a press release. Students should “reflect on what they learned and connect those experiences to their goals after high school.”

The project is part of the state’s effort to better prepare students for the workforce, the department said. Other efforts include the Future Readiness Project and Idaho Career Readiness Competencies.
