U.S. News and World Report has released its annual college and university rankings.

It’s a detailed scoring system weighted heavily on student outcomes, such as graduation rates; faculty resources; and “expert opinion,” which gauges a school’s reputation by considering other rankings and ratings. Here’s what the magazine has to say about Idaho’s college and universities. (Click on each school’s name for more detail):

University of Idaho. No. 179 for national universities (out of 381 institutions). The U of I also was rated No. 79 for best value, factoring academic quality against costs, and comes in No. 133 on the list of best colleges for veterans. The U of I also makes the list of “A-plus schools for B students” — in other words, schools that offer a quality education, but have less selective admissions standards.

Boise State University. Ranked between No. 293 and No. 381 for national universities. Boise State ranked No. 42 for innovation, for “making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities.” Boise State also ranked No. 285 in a “social mobility” category, “by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants.”

Idaho State University. Unranked for national universities. Its business programs were ranked  No. 224, while its doctoral engineering programs ranked No. 170.

The College of Idaho. Ranked No. 117 for national liberal arts colleges (out of 215 institutions). The C of I tied for No. 4 in social mobility, and tops among liberal arts colleges in the region. “Earning a college degree has never been more important for helping young people to move up in socioeconomic status,” co-President Jim Everett said in a news release Monday: “We are excited to be recognized … as being best in the West.”

Northwest Nazarene University. Ranked No. 43 for regional universities in the West (out of 113 institutions). Ranked No. 37 for best value, and No. 65 for social mobility. NNU is also listed as an A-plus school for B students.

Brigham Young University-Idaho. Ranked No. 20 for regional colleges in the West (out of 33 instutitions). BYU-Idaho topped this classification for innovation, and ranked No. 24 for social mobility.

Lewis-Clark State College. Ranked between No. 26 and No. 33 for regional colleges in the West. Ranked No. 33 for social mobility.
