Celebrating our school board leaders during Idaho’s School Board Appreciation Month

Public schools are essential to the American Dream, which is a deeply ingrained belief that anyone – regardless of their background – can achieve success and prosperity. Each June in Idaho, the Idaho School Boards Association (ISBA) celebrates School Board Appreciation Month. We appreciate the important work school board members contribute to their schools and communities year-round. Each June, we reflect on the crucial role our school board members play in shaping the educational landscape for students. They are public servants who play an important role in every community in Idaho.

Serving on a school board is no small task. These elected officials, who, unlike many elected officials, do not get paid for their service, often navigate complex issues that require both strategic thinking and an understanding of the wide-ranging needs of the students, staff, and the schools they serve while juggling the needs and wants of the communities they represent. They often have to make decisions that may be tough or controversial while keeping the best interests of the students in mind. From navigating complex budget decisions to selecting policies that best serve the students in their districts and charter schools, board members play a crucial role in creating an environment where all students can succeed.

We are fortunate to have committed individuals who are passionate about taking on this important role. They volunteer their time and spend countless hours attending meetings, engaging with their community members, and advocating at the local and state level for Idaho’s students. Their efforts are essential in ensuring every child receives a quality education that prepares them for success – something we should all recognize and celebrate.

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude, along with that of all the ISBA staff. I encourage readers to engage with your local school board members in meaningful ways by attending board meetings, participating in local discussions when available, serving on volunteer committees, communicating with your school board regularly, and making sure you vote in school board elections. Community involvement is vital for the success of our students.

As we celebrate School Board Appreciation Month, join us in recognizing the dedicated individuals who help shape the future of Idaho. Their leadership, service, and commitment to our students and communities make a lasting impact. Together, we can create an educational environment where every student has the opportunity to fulfill their American Dream. Thank you, school board members, for your incredible service and dedication!
