Rigby High School teacher Laron Johnson has been named the 2026 Idaho Teacher of the Year, honoring nearly three decades of transformative teaching, innovation and student-centered learning.
Johnson was selected from nearly 200 nominees and will serve as spokesperson and representative for Idaho educators at a variety of local and national events throughout 2026.
Johnson, who has taught in the Jefferson School District for 28 years, is known for connecting with students and creating courses that go beyond textbooks — including Rigby High School’s Holocaust Studies Program, which Johnson founded and continues to lead. His classes in history, economics and personal development have influenced generations of students to think critically and see their role in shaping a better world.
“Laron Johnson represents everything we hope for in Idaho educators — creativity, compassion, and an unwavering belief in every student’s potential,” said state superintendent Debbie Critchfield. “His ability to connect students to both history and humanity is remarkable, and his influence reaches far beyond the classroom.”

Throughout his 28 years in education, Johnson has created programs that inspire curiosity and civic engagement. His environmental field studies courses have taken hundreds of students beyond the classroom to explore Idaho’s ecosystems and communities firsthand.
Colleagues and community members describe Johnson as an educator who “teaches individuals, not just lessons.” One parent, Katie Searle, shared in her recommendation letter that Johnson’s compassion and adaptability made all the difference for her family:
“Mr. Johnson excels in connecting with each student and employing varied teaching methods to help them feel capable and successful,” Searle wrote. “He teaches students to think — not just to memorize. His classroom is a safe place to land, and for many struggling with heavy and hard things, he provides a place to heal.”

Johnson has earned other state and national honors, including the Stanford University Exceptional Teaching Award, the Eastern Idaho Environmental Educator of the Year Award, and designation as an Idaho Master Educator. He has participated in international fellowships in Germany, Israel, Poland and Costa Rica to bring global context to his Idaho classrooms.

“Laron has been a cornerstone of Rigby High School for decades,” said Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin. “He challenges students to think critically, empathize deeply, and take ownership of their learning. We are incredibly proud to see him recognized as Idaho’s Teacher of the Year”
In his application, Johnson said his students and community are the reason he loves his work.

“Teaching in Rigby has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” Johnson said. “Every student brings their own story, and every day is a new opportunity to connect, challenge and learn together.”
Johnson will serve as the state’s representative in the National Teacher of the Year program.
“Mr. Johnson is the kind of teacher who helps students see themselves in history — and believe they have the power to shape it,” Critchfield said. “Idaho is fortunate to have him.”
