House Speaker Mike Moyle wants a member of his leadership team to fill a crucial vacancy on the Legislature’s budget-writing committee.
Moyle, R-Star, offered a Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee chair’s spot to Rep. Josh Tanner, R-Eagle, Idaho Public Television reported Wednesday.
“Everybody knows I’m going to put Josh as the chairman of JFAC,” Moyle told Idaho Reports.

Tanner was noncommittal Wednesday evening.
“Honestly, I haven’t made a decision at this point,” Tanner told Idaho Reports. “Am I the best fit, or can we bring in somebody else?”
Tanner serves as assistant majority leader and sits on JFAC, the powerful House-Senate committee that writes budget bills for all state agencies. The House chair’s position is vacant heading into the 2026 session, which begins Jan. 12, because Rep. Wendy Horman, R-Idaho Falls, has resigned midterm to take a job with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
If Tanner takes Horman’s spot as JFAC co-chair, this could trigger several other moves, and a domino effect.
Tanner told Idaho Reports that he would give up his spot in leadership if he takes the JFAC position.
House Education Committee Chairman Douglas Pickett, R-Oakley, and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jeff Ehlers, R-Meridian, both told Idaho Reports they would be interested in the leadership position. Members of leadership do not normally double as committee chairs.
