Brian Darcy

The head of the Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf and Blind is leaving the state after 15 years at the helm.

Brian Darcy will retire from the Gooding-based school on June 30. He is taking a job in the New York City borough of the Bronx, as executive director at the New York Institute for Special Education.

Darcy joined IESDB in 2009, working in an outreach role, and became administrator a year later. During his time at the school, IESDB has tripled its enrollment.

“The growth we’ve cultivated and the ongoing success of our students has been an inspiring and humbling experience, and I appreciate the support we’ve received over the years from the Idaho Department of Education, governor’s office and the Idaho Legislature,” Darcy said in a news release.

“(Darcy’s) tenure has been successful thanks to his big heart and commitment to serve his students,” said state superintendent Debbie Critchfield, who also chairs the IESDB’s board. “He’s earned every professional opportunity that comes his way, and he will be missed here in Idaho.”

Darcy’s roots in the IESDB community run deep. He grew up around the campus while his father served as the school’s administrator. Darcy graduated from Gooding High School before attending Carroll College in Helena, Mont., and Idaho State University.

The New York Institute for Special Education is a school for the blind, established in 1831.
