Nearly 300 students from 70 Idaho schools were greeted with pom-poms and cheers at Albertsons Stadium on Saturday — in celebration of a nine-week math challenge.

The Khan Academy, a free, educational website, launched LearnStorm Idaho in January, a math challenge that more than 35,000 Idaho students from 400 schools participated in.

“The program helped students challenge themselves and find their own path in math,” said Cora Larson, a lead teacher at Horseshoe Bend Elementary.

The final celebration hosted students from across the state who demonstrated ability in math and a distinctive amount of hustle. Students earned two types of points during the challenge. “Mastery points” represented understanding of math skills and students earned “hustle points” when they demonstrated perseverance and grit in learning a new skill.

“LearnStorm helped my brain grow a lot,” said Colby Swan, a third-grader at Horseshoe Bend Elementary. “The Khan Academy videos helped me reflect on my learning, which made me think out problems better.”

Idaho students completed more than six million math problems and spent nearly 90,000 hours on Khan Academy.

“If LearnStorm comes back next year I will do it again,” said Genesis Cornejo, an eighth-grader at Lone Star Middle School. “I struggle with math and I enjoyed the videos because I would watch lessons until I understood the topic.”

Students in Idaho joined the Bay Area, Chicago and Ireland as one of only four regions to participate in the challenge. Students earned points to unlock real-life rewards for themselves and their schools by practicing math skills aligned to standards on Khan Academy. Students in grades three through 12 participated.
