On Tuesday night, the Nampa School Board will meet to get organized for the year ahead — to elect a new board chairperson and formally welcome newly elected Brian McGourty and Mike Fuller to the board.

But as the board gets down to business, the Nampa Education Association will hold a “tailgate party” outside district offices.

The purpose, according to a union news release, is to provide “information and insight to board members, teachers, public and media on the status of negotiations between NEA and the board.”

The 2012-13 budget year ended June 30 with no agreement between the district and the union, so district officials issued contracts last week that will include 14 unpaid furlough days. The furloughs will reduce the 2013-14 school calendar, and are designed to erase much of a $3 million shortfall.

Negotiations between the two sides are scheduled to resume July 18.

The School Board will begin its meeting at 6:30 p.m. with a work session,  at the same time the NEA will hold its tailgate outside district offices, 619 S. Canyon Ave.

The regular board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
