Democratic lawmakers laud school votes

Democratic legislative leaders praised voters for passing school funding measures from Madison County to Middleton.

Rep. Mat Erpelding

But they also decried one failed school bond issue, in the Magic Valley’s Shoshone School District.

“Last night we saw, once again, voters embrace Democratic values when it comes to community and education,” House Minority Leader Mat Erpelding of Boise said in a news release. “We have seen those values come through all over the state this year with the vast majority of school bond and levy measures passing with a supermajority of voters.”

Shoshone’s failed $6 million bond issue hit home for Senate Minority Leader Michelle Stennett of Ketchum. Her Magic Valley legislative district includes Lincoln County and Shoshone.

Sen. Michelle Stennett

“Students in the Shoshone district deserve all of the same opportunities as every other Idahoan,” Stennett said. “Instead, they are forced to do more with less. If Idaho truly wants to provide opportunity for all of its residents, state lawmakers have to step up and fund our public schools.”
