Nampa’s outsourced custodial staffers will have the first shot at keeping their old jobs.

If they apply Saturday at a job fair.

The job fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nampa High School, will be open to district custodians who want to apply with GCA Services Group.

The Nampa School District signed a contract with GCA, outsourcing 83 custodial jobs in a move that will cut pension and health care benefits costs, allowing the district to trim $305,000 from a $5.1 million deficit. The move goes into effect July 1.

The district has said the 83 jobs will be kept intact, and pay will remain relatively the same. GCA says all current employees who apply Saturday will be offered their old jobs back, pending the results of drug tests and background checks. They won’t necessarily keep their current jobs at the current schools, however.

If current employees miss Saturday’s job fair, they can come to a second fair on May 18 — but at the time, jobs will be open to new applicants as well.

However, the Nampa district is leaning against outsourcing its nutritionists’ jobs — an idea that came up when the district decided to contract out janitorial services.

“The district administration and the Financial Recommendation Committee reviewed the information and found no direct savings to the district’s general fund, so we will be recommending the board reject the nutrition services proposals,” interim superintendent Thomas Michaelson said in a statement issued late Friday afternoon.

The school board will consider the issue Tuesday night.
