Idaho educators receive White House honors

A Caldwell teacher and a Boise school math coach will head to the White House later this summer to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Melyssa Ferro and Ramey Uriarte will be honored alongside 106 other teachers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. Each teacher will receive a $10,000 National Science Foundation award to use at their discretion.

Ferro teaches at Caldwell’s Syringa Middle School. She teaches seventh- and eighth-grade earth, life and advanced science at Syringa, and has taught in Caldwell schools for 16 years,  according to a post on the Caldwell School District’s Facebook page.

Uriarte was honored for his work at Meridian’s Heritage Middle School. Uriarte now works in the Boise School District’s administrative offices. According to his profile on Edmodo.com, a networking site linking parents, teachers and students, Uriarte is a math coach who has spent 18 years in education.
