Thank you to everyone who participated in the EdNews first day of school photo contest — more than 50 people entered photos. Shauna Schumann, an Idaho Falls resident and mother of four, won $100 after 354 votes were tallied on Facebook and Twitter. Her photo received 112 votes.

Shauna’s photo was taken in September at a historic park in downtown Idaho Falls near the Snake River. Her son Isaiah, an eighth-grader at the Idaho Virtual Academy, is featured in the photo. On the first day of school Isaiah headed down near the Snake River with his books and laptop to study.

“We love to change things up – we will take most of his offline work to the park, coffee shop and even on the trampoline,” Shauna said.

Shauna a Colorado native, moved to Boise last year with her family, and in June moved to Idaho Falls. She has been homeschooling Isaiah for four years and he  joined the Idaho Virtual Academy last year.

“My son is very disciplined and he does his own thing. The teachers are very supportive – as a mom I don’t feel overwhelmed at all,” Shauna said. “Our experience has been fantastic.”
