Teens find bargain prom wear

Prom season is here and Treasure Valley teens are in search of the perfect dress or tuxedo — typically a costly adventure. A teen spends on average $919 for the big dance, according to a national survey by Visa.

But the Assistance League of Boise is making this trip down memory lane an affordable one with a program labeled Cinderella’s Closet, where Ada County teens can rent a dazzling outfit for $15. The Assistance League has a wardrobe of more than 600 dresses and 100 tuxes that was donated by the community. Volunteers mend and wash the wear so they look new and fitting of the special occasion.

“We get a lot of support from the community — all of our dresses are donated and we buy some tuxedos,” said Celia Fitzwater, chairman of Cinderella’s Closet. “We have all different types of styles from the ballroom Cinderella dresses to sleek more sophisticated dresses.”

Cinderella’s Closet has already rented 60 dresses and 30 tuxedos for this prom season.

Eagle High senior Jacob Celmer said he was surprised on the variety available to rent.

“I think it’s a great plan if you don’t want to spend a lot of money and you can get a really nice tux for very cheap,” Celmer said.

Hannah Owens, a sophomore at The Ambrose School, found her perfect dress with a couple of fittings. She plans to come back next year for homecoming.

“I’ve been to the mall and they are expensive,” she said. “I heard about Cinderella’s Closet from a few friends from school and I was impressed on the number of dresses they have.”

Cinderella’s Closet still has plenty of dresses and tuxedos to rent. Ada County teens are welcome to stop in on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. — click here for information.
