STEM camp prepares students for the future

The Discover Technology STEM Camp is taking over Boise this week. More than 150 Treasure Valley K-12 kids are building quadcopters, robots, Minecraft Mods and their own computers. This is the third year the camp has been held in the Boise area – the non-profit Discover Technology is holding summer programs throughout Idaho in Nampa, Rathdrum, Idaho Falls and Hailey. More than 700 students are already signed up to participate in the camp statewide.

“The camp gets the kids excited about STEM – it’s fun and educational,” said Alison Lark, from Discovery Technology. “There is a high demand for jobs in STEM careers and getting these students interested at a young ages is very important.”

Jeffrey, a fourth grader at Summerwinds STEM Academy, wants to be a video game designer when he grows up. He joined the camp to learn more about Minecraft.

“I love Minecraft and computers – this camp is teaching me a lot of different things,” he said. “I’m learning about one dimensional games and I always thought it was in pixels – it’s a lot of fun to learn about all the different types of games.”

The camp is focused on teaching kids about innovation in science and technology through hands-on experience and mentor based programs.

“The kids enjoy this camp because technology is something that interests them and they just have a good time overall,” Lark said.
