Chocolate cream, apple and pecan — with such delicious varieties as these, there is much to celebrate on Pie Day at the Statehouse. Every year since 1992, the Idaho Coalition of Home Educators sponsors Pie Day, which has become an institution at the Statehouse.

“This is a time to show legislatures what home school students and teachers are up to,” said Christine Monaghan, a member of the Idaho Coalition of Home Educators. “We (home school parents) are asking that we just have our freedom — we aren’t looking for tax credits.”

In honor of the occasion, home school students and teachers baked more than 200 pies.

“I put the date on my calendar,” said Rep. Maxine Bell, R-Jerome. “Pie Day is so unique and it only happens once a year.”

Pie Day started in 1992 when home educators baked cherry pies to distribute in the Statehouse to celebrate President George Washington’s birthday.

“It’s a great opportunity to interact with the families,” said Sen. Cliff Bayer, R-Meridian.
